B is for Brand Name Drugs

B is for Brand Name Drugs

Drugs are one of the most costly expenses when it comes to health care. If you are like my household, you may have one or more family members who have multiple brand name drug prescriptions that must be filled every month. That can add up quickly!

Here are some things to think about when you are shopping for health insurance and considering how your prescriptions will be impacted.

  • Does your insurance cover your brand name drugs before or after you meet your deductible?

  • How much is your copay? Is is a flat amount or a percentage?

  • Do you get a discount if you use mail order refills?

  • Do you get a discount if you use a certain pharmacy? In Washington, Regence will give you a $5 discount if you fill your prescription at Walgreens.

  • Have you talked to your doctor about generic alternatives?

  • Does the pharmaceutical company have any programs that will help you pay for your prescription? Check their website for coupons and savings programs.

Don't get blindsided by the cost of your prescriptions. Know how your coverage works.
